Our History

In early 2004 Sidney Powell invited a group of friends to convene around her dining room table to bring our concerns and skills to bear on the exponentially increasing problem of domestic violence in our region. Those present included Barbra Love, Lorena Wiedeman, Leigh Ruhl, Lynn Kieffer, Hellen Goldfarb, Carolyn Moore, Diane Westbrook, and Linda Turner. In addition, we had the “proxies” of Coleman Smith, Sally Sword and Ann Skoglund. This was the foreground of The Genesis Alliance, patterned after a like organization in Dallas, Texas.

A wider circle of friends were invited to a spring membership meeting at the home of Sally Sword to hear an overview of our plans and learn more about the problem of domestic violence and the work of Helpmate in our community. In an unprecedented outpouring of generosity, attendees brought enough paper products and supplies to stock the Helpmate Women’s Shelter for a year!

And so it began, from there we structured and defined our unique approach. We decided that we could help best by raising funds for organizations that dealt directly with the solutions to the various components of this problem. We also wanted to offer a platform from which they could address their specific needs to the greater community.

On March 25, 2004, the non-profit Genesis Alliance was incorporated under the laws of North Carolina and by January 2005 we had obtained IRS 501(c) (3) status. Under the leadership of our Founder and first President, Sidney Powell, Genesis Alliance set out to make a new beginning in breaking the cycle of domestic violence.
